Nigeria’s 2014 Commonwealth Bid Has Sentimental Attachment

Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasanjo spoke with the Abuja Games Bid Committee Wednesday stressing the significance of hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Abuja, because 2014 was Nigeria’s centenary of existence. The President noted that Nigeria is “sentimentally attached” to the year 2014.

He also expressed confidence in the ability of the Abuja Games bid committee to do a good job and meet the challenge.

Mike Hopper, the Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Games Federation, who was also at the meeting, described the Games as the “second biggest international sporting event after the Summer Olympics”, adding that the Games offered much more than just a sporting spectacle.

He said that all stakeholders, including government, private sector, sponsors, the media and the sporting community, must work in a harmonious partnership.

Scotland and Canada are also bidding for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
