Nigeria To Promote 2014 Commonwealth Bid

Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games bid committee is considering embarking on a tour of some countries in its bid to convince the 53-members of the union that Nigeria is the best candidate to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Last week the Nigerian government named Abuja as Nigeria’s candidate for the 2014 bid.

A member of the committee said, “we know that we’re a little bit behind some of the others bidding for the same games, but we believe that with hard work and determination we will succeed”.

The committee wants to promote its bid ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne because any delay means that Nigeria will have to play catch up on those countries that have already announced their bids.

Countries interested in bidding include Canada and Scotland.

According to allAfrica.com, the member said, “we know that others interested in the 2014 games have already begun their moves some time ago, but this does not mean we don’t stand a chance. We do, it only means that we have to work harder and one of the ways to convince fellow members of our desire is to reach out to them before Melbourne”.

Some of the “influential” countries that may be visited include Britain, India, Jamaica and Australia. The bid committee will also reach out to a number of fellow African member states like Ghana and South Africa.

The bid official told the Web site that they are very confident that Nigeria stands “a very good chance”, especially since it will be the first time an African country would host the Commonwealth Games should the bid be successfully.
