Nigeria Confident Of Hosting 2014 Commonwealth Games

Nigeria’s former head of state Yakubu Gowon said Wednesday he is confident Nigeria will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which would coincide with the centennial of the country’s unification.

Gowon told the official News Agency of Nigeria, “we stand a good chance. Our presentation has been well received. Moreover we are not doing it alone but for and on behalf of the whole of Africa”.

He said he was impressed with the level of organization at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne “as well as the way we have been received by the organizers and members of the Commonwealth Family. I believe we have a good chance to win the bid”.

Nigeria’s bid committee has a strong delegation of 80 members in Melbourne. According to Scotland’s Evening Times the group showed up two hours late for their presentation Sunday, spoke for one minute during the 10-minutes allotted, and used the other nine minutes to show a video.
