Nigeria organized a 14-member committee Tuesday to develop a bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games which could be a stepping stone to a future bid for the World Games and the Olympic Games.
Nigeria wants to be the first African nation to host the Commonwealth Games.
President Olusegun Obasanjo said Nigeria has the facilities to stage the Games, which he hoped would improve global perceptions of the country.
If the bid succeeds Nigeria would be the first African country to host the Commonwealth Games since the event was first staged in 1930.
Melbourne is hosting the 2006 Commonwealth Games and New Delhi will host the Games in 2010.
