Dr. Yakubu Gowon, chairman of Nigeria’s 2014 Commonwealth Bid Committee, said his committee would be making a presentation at the African Union Foreign Ministers (AU) Meeting in the Gambian capital, Banjul, especially to the Commonwealth member states.
Dr. Gowon said that N500 million has been appropriated for the bid committee and said the amount was too small considering the amount of work the committee has to do, particularly when compared to what other nations interested in bidding were spending.
He said, “yes, the sum of N500 million was appropriated to the bid committee and bidding to host the Commonwealth Games is a very expensive venture and other countries have voted quite a large sum to ensure they achieve success. This amount is not enough because there are lots to be done”.
The committee will be meeting with the Commonwealth Federation in Australia between July 9 and 13, and will visit four Commonwealth countries to drum up support for Abuja’s bid.
