New York’s Mayor Promotes 2012 Bid In Athens

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is in Athens visiting the 2004 Summer Games facilities and promoting New York’s 2012 Summer Olympic bid.

After touring the construction sites Bloomberg said he was “working to bring the 2012 Summer Olympics to New York”.

He said, “New York is the world’s most international city and I can think of no city save the birthplace of modern Olympics perhaps that is better suited to host the world Games. Hopefully, we will have that opportunity”.

He added that in “New York we also plan to use the Olympics to build for the decades to follow the closing ceremonies”.

Bloomberg and Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov pledged closer cooperation between their cities. The mayors signed declarations promoting intercity diplomacy and an agreement calling for a union of Olympic cities that would unite all past, present and future host cities. The union must still get approval from the International Olympic Committee executive board.
