During a debate between two New York Gubanatorial candidates H. Carl McCall and Andrew M. Cuomo the subject of using public money to build a stadium on the West Side of Manhattan was mentioned. The stadium is crucial if New York wants to become the U.S. candidate for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
The debate moderator asked the two candidates to give a one-word answer whether they opposed using public money to build the stadium. McCall said he opposed using public money while Cuomo replied “maybe”. Later Cuomo said he would support it if it was tied to the Olympics bid.
