New York 2012 Protestors Against Stadium

Prior to the second in a series of economic-development hearings by New York city council on New York’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, a group of about 45 protestors from the city’s Hells Kitchen voiced their opposition to a West Side Stadium, part of New York’s 2012 bid, although they favoured the expansion of the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

NYC2012 executive director Jay Kriegel said that a West Side Stadium/Jacob Javits Convention Center expansion project would be a consortium of city, state and New York Jets funds, since the stadium would become the NFL team’s permanent home.

Newsday reports that several complained that their districts were being left out of the Olympic plans, including the Upper West Side, Staten Island, Coney Island and the Bronx.

Kriegel explained that all five boroughs are part of the bid but that proposed sites were based on the efficiency of moving athletes, officials and spectators by rail and fast ferry.
