The New York Post reports that if New York wins the bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, five of the venues it must erect would be located on some of the city’s most toxic sites.
According to the Post’s Sam Smith, New York 2012 organizers are now re-evaluating the cost of the Games for its report to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due in November.
Although NYC2012 has already allocated more than $70 million to clean the toxic wastelands, officials admit the figure could rise by at least $100 million.
Backers of the Olympic bid say cleaning up the sites will have lasting benefits.
Dan Doctoroff, Deputy Mayor of New York and head of NYC2012 said he thought cleaning these sites is “one of the great legacies of the Games”.
