Should New York host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, the Paralympics would be held from August 31 to September 11, 2012.
New York’s Paralympic plan will have athletes in a single Paralympic Village, the same as the Olympic Village, at the centre of the city on a waterfront site directly across the East River from the United Nations. The compact site of the Village will have quick and easy access to all facilities and transportation.
The Paralympic Plan features two major clusters – the Olympic Square in the heart of Manhattan, with athletics taking place in the Olympic Stadium; wheelchair basketball in Madison Square Garden; and wheelchair fencing, judo, power lifting, wheelchair rugby and table tennis at the Javits Convention Center.
The second cluster, Randalls Island Olympic Center, the site of a new sports complex within New York City, will feature football, wheelchair tennis, goalball and boccia.
Road cycling will take place in Central Park, swimming in the Olympic Aquatics Center at Williamsburg Waterfront Park, and wheelchair basketball at the Brooklyn Olympic Arena.
There will be track cycling at the Bronx Olympic Velodrome, equestrian at Greenbelt Equestrian Center, volleyball at the 369th Regiment Armory, archery at the Flushing Meadows Archery Fields, shooting at the Pelham Bay Shooting Center, and sailing at Breezy Point Marina, ten miles from the Paralympic Village.
According to New York 2012 twelve accessible, state-of-the art venues will be left as a permanent legacy within New York City as a direct result of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. These facilities will be capable of hosting international championships in Paralympic sports and provide high-performance training opportunities for athletes.
New York 2012’s Circle of Paralympians consists of 86 athletes who have helped design the Paralympic plan and are actively involved in New York’s bid. Twenty-three of them are competing at the Athens 2004 Paralympics.
New York 2012 said it plans to build on its experience co-hosting the 1984 Paralympic Games.
