The NYC2012 committee for New York 2012 announced Thursday that five finalists have been selected out of more than 130 entries from 20 countries for an Innovative Design Study for the proposed 2012 Olympic Village.
The finalists are Henning Larsens Tegnestue A/S from Copenhagen, MVRDV from Rotterdam, Santa Monica-based Morphosis, Smith-Miller & Hawkinson Architects from New York, and Zaha Hadid Architects from London, England.
The proposed site for the Olympic Village is directly across the East River from the United Nations. During the Games the facility would house 16,000 athletes and coaches and following the Games it would provide world-class residential housing for up to 18,000 New Yorkers.
An 8-member Design Review Panel that evaluated all entries in terms of qualifications and design concepts selected the five finalists.
The five finalists will now participate in a 14-week planning and design study. In March 2004 the finalists’ submissions will be presented to the public through an exhibit and interactive Web site.
The final round of competition will include an evaluation and public comment period. The winning design will be announced in May 2004.
