New Wembley Stadium Could Boost London 2012 Bid

Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, says a new Wembley would increase Britain’s chances of hosting the 2012 Olympic Games. He says a rebuilt stadium coupled with the recent success of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, makes hosting the Olympics “a distinct possibility”.

Livingstone has urged the British Government to give the bid its full backing.

He said, “… an Olympic bid needs to be a national bid and, if we are going to put the best possible proposal together, the Government needs to make a firm commitment in the next few weeks”.

Wembley would likely host Olympic football matches, though other uses are being investigated.

The Government will decide this year whether to submit a bid to host the 2012 Games.
