Bib Ctvrtlik, one of three American members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was appointed international vice president of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) Tuesday.
Seven weeks ago the USOC appointed Robert Fasulo as its new chief of international relations. The Associated Press reports that both moves are expected to have a large impact on any American bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
USOC chairman Peter Ueberroth said of Ctvrtlik’s appointment, “the relationships and expertise he brings to this assignment will be instrumental in strengthening our international profile and enabling the USOC to take a more active role worldwide”.
The USOC Board of Directors decided last summer that any American city bidding for the Olympic Games must first meet with the USOC to get a clear understanding of what is involved in the bid process. Some American cities have announced their bids before meeting with the USOC although IOC rules state that any city bidding for the Games must first have approval from its country’s Olympic committee.
According to the Associated Press the USOC board is meeting in Denver next month to discuss the framework of a possible 2016 Summer Olympic bid.
