New Government Won't Affect London 2012

London 2012 head Lord Sebastian Coe said Wednesday that preparations for the Summer Games won’t be affected by the general election which led to the resignation of Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The British government is now led by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron in a coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

The Associated Press reports Coe said the London 2012 Games retains the support of all parties and promised that London will deliver the Games “irrespective of the political landscape”.

Coe said, “intellectually I can say this is a project that will go on as it was 24 hours ago. Things will not change apart from the fact that we are now two years out from delivery. This is a critical year for us.

“Much of what we do will affect and shape the delivery of the Games in 2012 and all the political parties understand that. All those in government or in a shadow position understand they have a close part in our team.

“Going forward, a very important part of our character has been continuity”.

Meanwhile Labour’s Tessa Jowell is out as Olympics Minister and is expected to be replaced by Conservative Party lawmaker Hugh Robertson, reports the Associated Press.
