If Nigeria wins the right to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games the Nigerian government plans to build a new Games Village in Abuja to accommodate athletes, said former Head of State Gen.Yakubu Gowon in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
He said the Games bid committee, which he heads, has made the commitment in its bid document to be submitted by November 2007.
Gowon added that facilities required for a successful hosting of the Games such as additional swimming pools would be provided.
He explained that the 17-man committee had already begun the diplomatic aspect of the bid with his visit to Uganda where he met with sports authorities there.
Gowon said, “South Africa has already written to give their support to Nigeria. We are going to have the opportunity of visiting other countries but where we cannot, we will use Nigeria’s embassies or theirs here to garner support”.
