New Facility Could Boost Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Bid – CGF Given Activist’s Report

A 1.5 million pound “world class”-curling centre is set to be built on the outskirts of Edinburgh, which could be used for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games if Glasgow wins the bid.

The centre is expected to host top national and international competitions.

The centre will replace the Gogar Park Club. The club is now drawing up more detailed plans. Officials hope to begin work next spring and the facility should be finished in early 2009.

Meanwhile an activist group called Changing Attitude Nigeria, has given a dossier to Mike Hooper, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, demanding Glasgow be awarded the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

A campaign has been launched following the announcement of new proposed legislation which would make any form of public support for homosexuality a criminal offence, reports the Evening Times.

Mike Hersee, co-author of the report said, “unless there is a moratorium on this type of legislation Abuja should not be allowed to compete with Glasgow for the 2014 Games”.

According to the newspaper the 11-page report outlines how Abuja’s bid jars with the Commonwealth constitution which dictates there shall be no discrimination against any country or person.

A spokesman for the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said Hooper had received the report but declined to comment.
