New Delhi To Beautify City Before 2010 Commonwealth Games

Delhi Finance Minister A.K. Walia said Friday among a major thrust of proposals ahead of the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games is to beautify the city.

He told IANS, “the Commonwealth Games is a huge event for us and our government wants to make all necessary arrangements before 2010. The budget has many such measures which will not only benefit the players coming to Delhi but also make Delhi a world class city”.

Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy said the Government of NCT of Delhi has prepared an Action Plan for the improvement and beautification of roads, construction of flyovers, improvement of the transport system, setting up of hospital and health posts.

Regarding the acute water problem in Delhi Walia said his government was urging the central government to help ensure 140 gallons of water per day from neighbouring states.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has identified 18 venues for 15 approved and three proposed disciplines, said Reddy.

The Delhi Games Village is to be constructed as a low-rise medium development on a 40-acre site in the heart of the capital with a possible capacity for 8,500 athletes and officials.

“Sheru” the Tiger will be the mascot for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, as announced by Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of the Games organizing committee Thursday. He said one of the reasons the mascot was chosen was because of the popularity of the tiger.

The proposed dates for the Games are October 3 to 14, inclusive of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
