Nevada To Introduce Bill To Fund 2014 Winter Games

The Associated Press reports that a bill has been introduced in the Nevada Senate that would appropriate $200,000 over the next two years, the money to be used for an organizing committee and the costs related to submit an application to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The report says Nevada is proposing to host the Games in the Reno-Lake Tahoe area.

Talk of Nevada bidding for the 2014 Games goes back to February 2002 when a Reno-Tahoe group called Sparks said there was a 50-50 chance local organizers would conduct a feasibility study that year on bidding for the Games, looking into venue sites, and estimating costs.

A fund raiser was held for the event almost five years ago.

In January 2003 the Nevada Commission on Sports, which formed the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition, said it would unveil a Reno 2014 Web site for Internet users to witness the progress of the quest. As of today the Web site wasn’t available.

In February 2003 there was talk of holding a feasibility study on a 2014 bid, and in March of 2003 officials from Reno and the Lake Tahoe area said they were scheduling a press conference to provide details and a timeline for activities related to their campaign.

Finally, in July of 2003 officials with the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition said 2014 remains the group’s focus, but 2018 might be more realistic.
