Following PyeongChang’s selection by the International Olympic Committee as one of the three candidate cities for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, a Korean Parliamentary committee began an on-site inspection and study of Olympic competition sports venues and other facilities being prepared for the 2014 Games.
The 15-person committee traveled to Olympic sports venues in and near PyeongChang on its first day Saturday obtaining up-to-date status reports from officials on the scene on all projects in the design or development stage, along with those already completed.
They visited the Jungbong downhill ski jump in Jeongseon, and the future Alpensia Resort where the biathlon, cross-country and ski-jump competition venues will be built. Resort facilities and lodging areas that are part of PyeongChang’s bid will also be on the agenda.
On the second day Sunday there is a workshop aimed at devising measures by which the National Assembly can most effectively support the bid.
Gangwon Governor Kim Jin Sun said, “support from the National Assembly, such as providing the budget necessary to expand infrastructure for sports and venues and to improve the road network, will be expanded and become the spark to build national enthusiasm for holding the 2014 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang”.
The governor added that he looked forward to the establishment of other national-level Olympic bid support committees.
