Munich Presents 2018 Bid Study

Munich presented a study Monday for a possible 2018 Winter Olympic Games bid amid positive signals from the German Olympic Committee (DOSB) that the city would be Germany’s representative for a 2018 Olympic bid.

DOSB head Thomas Bach, who is also on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said, “we want to get the Olympics to Germany. Not only the city of Munich but the state of Bavaria and the whole of German sport are behind the effort”.

The deciding vote on a German Olympic representative takes place December 8 in Hamburg.

Munich hosted the 1972 Summer Olympic Games.

Earthtimes reports Munich plans a compact concept with three clusters which according to Bach “meets international requirements”. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the ice sports events would be in Munich, all the snow events would take place in Garmish-Partenkichen, and the sliding competition would be at the existing venue in Koenigssee.

Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said at the presentation, “the Olympic bid offers an outstanding chance to present German sport on the international stage and consolidate the image of Germany as a modern country. The bid requires a joint effort to make it a success for the Federal Republic of Germany as well”.

Bach said, “the DOSB welcomes the support from the government and the state of Bavaria”, adding that Munich organizers are well prepared.
