Munich 2018 Winter Olympic Bid Is Threatened

A possible Munich bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games is being threatened because of floundering negotiations for TV rights that could show a poor precedent should Munich host the 2018 Games.

The German ski federation is in acute financial need and although the Alpine and Nordic World Cups are taking place in Germany the event is in danger of being blacked out due to the failing negotiations because of the option rights being exercised by media partner RTL.

Thomas Bach, President of the German Sports League, said if winter sports were blacked out on television it would be detrimental to a possible Munich 2018 Olympic bid. He added he didn’t think a solution would be forthcoming in the near future.

In July Germany’s Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) endorsed a possible bid by Munich for the 2018 Games.
