A poll, drawn up by ICM for the Mayor of London, gives London’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games another boost. The poll shows that 67 per cent of London residents now want London to host the 2012 Games and only 21 per cent oppose them.
According to the poll, there is also a huge awareness among Londoners about the proposed funding arrangements, with 70 per cent aware of the arrangements and 63 per cent believing it is reasonable.
As for overall support for the bid, 42 per cent say they strongly support the bid and 25 per cent say they tend to support it. Thirteen per cent of respondents strongly oppose the bid.
London’s Mayor Ken Livingstone said, “the poll demonstrates that once all the facts are explained Londoners overwhelmingly support the funding package for the 2012 Olympics”.
London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe added: “the funding agreement on bringing the Olympics to London, with a council tax rise of 38 pence a week, is excellent value, with Londoners getting an extra three pounds in public investment form the lottery for every one pound they will contribute”.
