Moscow 2012 Targets More Than Two Million Supporters

Moscow 2012 will announce a target of 2,012,000 supporters in less than six weeks, at the opening of the annual Slava National Sports Awards held in the city’s Russian Army Theatre. Since Moscow launched its 2012 bid in November 2004, almost 1.2 million people have pledged their support.

In support of Moscow’s bid, Olympic champions and Russian athletes will press the Olympic counting machine which has been moved to the Russian Army Theatre from its location next to Red Square, and add their names.

Valery Shantsev, Moscow 2012 bid chairman said, “we have less than six weeks to reach our new target of 2,012,000 votes. On July 6 in Singapore the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will take its decision on the city that is to host the 2012 Games. I have no doubt that we here in Moscow will not only hit our target of 2,102,000 votes by then but that the International Olympic Committee will recognize that the enthusiasm of the people of Moscow and Russia to host the Games is equalled by our ability to turn it into a unique and historic event. We will be holding events all over Moscow in June to encourage people to sign up as supporters of our bid”.

Visitors to the Slava National Sports Awards will be able to view an Olympic Village concept, which is part of Moscow’s 2012 bid.

Meanwhile a new sports and health complex in Moscow’s Krylatskoye district which is one of the venues should Moscow’s host the 2012 Games, has just been completed. The complex covers 24,000 square metres and will house most of the competitions and training for football, mini-football, basketball, wrestling, table tennis and tennis.

Designed as a semi-sphere, the complex has four floors and includes three gymnasiums, two for basketball, and a central arena seating up to 5,000 spectators. Overlooking the sporting events will be a press centre, commentator cabins, and a rostrum for VIPs.

There are workout and training facilities, massage rooms, saunas, recreation rooms, first aid station, cardio-hall, lunch and cloakrooms. There is underground parking on two levels for 240 cars, 70 staff members and 170 visitors.
