A minute’s silence was observed at the first anniversary of the start of the Sydney Olympic Games Saturday, before the Olympic cauldron was re-lit in tribute to the opening ceremony last year.
New South Wales state Premier Bob Carr said before lighting the cauldron, “the Olympic spirit kindled here just a year ago was never more needed than now. On this anniversary of universal hospitality and international goodwill, we need to be reminded how little is gained by murder and grief and the fury of endless revenge”.
The cauldron has been refurbished and is in a new park adjacent to Olympic Boulevard. It will burn until the celebrations end Sept. 30.
