Majority Of Canadians Will Watch Olympics

According to a poll taken between Jan. 8-13 by the Leger Marketing survey, more than 80 per cent of Canadians are planning to watch part of the Salt Lake Winter Games, and the poll says that most of them will be watching hockey and figure skating.

The survey found that 18.2 per cent of respondents intended to watch the Games on a very regular basis while 39.8 per cent said their viewing of the Games would be somewhat regular.

Forty six per cent of males said they followed hockey most at the Winter Games, then came downhill skiing at 12.7 per cent and figure skating was 6.7 per cent.

Among women, 39.5 per cent chose figure skating as the top attraction, with downhill skiing second at 16.5 per cent and hockey third at 9.4 per cent.

Also, two-thirds of the respondents were either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the steps taken to control the use of drugs during the Olympics.

Canadian Dick Pound, chairman of the World Anti-Doping Agency said, “I think the work we’ve been doing with WADA has probably increased public confidence in the fact that somebody who has no axe to grind is on the job”.
