The final decision whether Madrid bids for the 2016 or 2020 Summer Olympic Games may ultimately be a political one and Madrid’s Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon has said that a final decision will not be taken until the fall of 2006.
Spanish Olympic Committee head Alejandro Blanco said the timing of the decision should be left to the mayor. “It is down to him to choose the moment to present the candidacy”.
Ruiz-Gallardon is to meet with the Spanish Olympic Committee on December 14 and its been reported that the signs are an announcement on the 2016 Games could come next spring.
Ruiz-Gallardon has said that he wished any decision to enjoy a broad consensus among Madrid’s political groups.
Socialist Workers’ Party Trinidad Jimenez said Tuesday “the mayor can make all the announcements he wants, but they will have no value until he has obtained the consensus of all the groups”.
Since Madrid lost its bid for the 2012 Games there has been controversy about the cutting back of some of the improvements promised to the city, including an Olympic Park to act as a green lung in the pollution-ridden capital, reports inadaily.com.
