The City Council of Madrid has contributed almost 1.7 million euros to Spanish Olympic Federations in a deal where the sports organizations will promise to support and promote the Madrid 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games bid.
The money will be used to organize sports activities that will be designed to promote Madrid’s ongoing campaign to secure the Games. The Federations also agree to help with the bid book development and promote the project with the International Olympic Committee and International Federations.
The Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, chaired the signing of the agreement on Wednesday.
Ruiz-Gallardon said the agreement implies that “the Spanish Olympic athletes also back the bid”.
Jaime Lissavetzky, Secretary of State for Sport, stressed the importance of “working step by step to go forward to the final vote”, and praised the “quality and efficiency” of the Spanish capital’s project.
National Olympic Committees have until September 13 to submit their nominations to bid for the 2016 Games – so far as many as five other cities have made their intentions known including Chicago, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Doha and Baku.
