On Tuesday, organizers of Madrid’s 2016 Olympic Games bid revealed the responses to the IOC questionnaire – the first step in the Olympic bid process. Madrid last bid for the 2012 Olympic Games and successfully qualified for the final vote only to place third behind London and Paris in IOC member voting.
The committee proposes to stage the Games between Friday August 5 and Sunday August 21, within the IOC prescribed date range.
The bid’s tagline, “Feel the experience – it’s in your hands” is designed to encourage the use of Olympism, culture and sport to promote multicultural understanding and integration according to the bid document. Madrid has planned a two zone venue concept: the Core Zone containing 15 venues and the River Zone that is part of a long-term regeneration project to recover green spaces.
The bid will be financed by both public and private funds of USD $40.4 million with USD $29.7 million designated for the candidature phase. Should Madrid win, the Games operating budget would be supported by private funding and capital infrastructure costs will be financed by the public sector. National, regional and local governments have committed to cover any budgetary deficits. The bid projects revenues to be over USD $1.6 billion.
The plan indicates that 10 new permanent venues need to be constructed while an additional two new venues will be temporary for Games use only.
A poll conducted in December shows that 86.7% of people asked in Madrid support the bid and 89.1% across Spain support the project.
