Madrid’s Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon said Thursday following Madrid’s unanimous approval by city council to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, that Madrid could attract at least 1.5 million extra tourists from 2016 until 2020.
Ruiz also said the Games would boost the city’s economy to the tune of six billion euros and would generate around 174,000 jobs, reports the People’s Daily.
He added that the city’s state, regional and municipal governments would have to spend nearly 6.5 billion euros, but the benefits for both Madrid and the rest of Spain will be immeasurable.
Madrid lost its bid for the 2012 Summer Games to London last year.
