According to a Madrid 2012 media release, following the bid city’s 10-minute presentation at SportAccord in Berlin, Madrid’s bid received the “longest and most resounding applause according to the ‘applausometer’ of the convention room”.
The release goes on to say the audience clapped for 45 seconds after Madrid’s presentation, 35 seconds after London’s presentation, 33 seconds for Paris, 18 seconds for New York and five seconds for Moscow. Madrid was the last of the five bid cities to present its bid.
Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, Mayor of Madrid, said the city “needs the Games, not only because of the legacy that will be left for future generations, but also and above all, to contribute to the development of the Olympic movement”.
He talked about the great support Madrid’s bid had “not only from the official and governmental institutions, but also from the whole Spanish society”
The Mayor mentioned that while the presentations were taking place, the World Taekwondo Championships were ending in Madrid, saying the event is “one of the 86 competitions that our city has organized during the last four years, showing that Madrid has become the leader in hosting international sports events”.
