Madrid 2012’s Chief Executive Officer Feliciano Mayoral highlights the political support for Madrid’s 2012 Summer Olympic bid. He said, “no city had as much institutional support as Madrid did in Athens”.
In Athens to show its support for Madrid’s bid were the Spanish royal family, Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister, Education Minister, the State Secretary for Sports, Madrid’s Mayor and the Community of Madrid’s Councillor for Culture and Sports.
Mayoral said that Madrid 2012 was considered in Athens as “a strong candidate, very compact and with a great project with regards to its organization”.
Seventy per cent of the facilities have already been built and Mayoral said, “we aim to have 90 per cent finished by 2008”.
He added that the bid is supported by 90 per cent of Madrid’s citizens and by 88 per cent of Spaniards.
Madrid wants to offer a car-free Olympic Games should it win the bid. The project focuses on three areas, East, Centre and West, allowing the public to get everywhere by public transport.
