Madrid 2012 Unveils Olympic Bid Foundation

Madrid’s Mayor, Alberto Ruiz Galardon, unveiled the Fundacion Madrid 2012, a non profit company created to promote Madrid’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

He called Madrid’s bid for the 2012 Games a historic opportunity. He said Madrid is the only European city bidding for the 2012 Games that has not hosted an Olympic Games. He added that Madrid’s bid is counting on the experience of the Barcelona Olympics.

Before the announcement Madrid’s bid committee held its first meeting and decided that in 2004 150 million euros will be invested in infrastructure for the Games, and in 2005 the European Athletics Championships will be held in the Palacio de los Deportes.

Also, innovative projects will be undertaken at the Caja Magica tennis site or the Aquatic Centre, said the mayor.

Representatives of municipal political groups, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Spanish Olympic Committee, the Secretary of State for Sport, the General Director of the Superior de Deportes and a long list of personalities from the world of sport were on hand for the announcement. They were all united under the Madrid 2012 slogan Juntos Podemos (Together We Are Able).
