Once a winning architect of the site is selected, work on the extension of Madrid’s de La Peineta Stadium will begin in the fall.

Madrid’s Secretary of State for Sport called Madrid’s stadium the “jewel of the Olympic Ring” and underlined the importance of the site in terms of its strategic location in the Eastern zone close to the Aquatic Center and the Olympic Pavilion where the majority of the activity in Madrid’s proposed 2012 Games will take place.

The stadium’s capacity will increase from 20,000 to 60,000 spectators.

Following the Games it will be transformed into a football stadium seating 74,000 spectators.

Also, Vallehermoso Stadium will be transformed into an athletic stadium seating 15,000 spectators. According to Madrid’s Mayor, “this is being done to create more sports infrastructure. The plans comply with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) recommendations about the utilization of sports facilities post Olympics”, he said.
