A year-and-a-half ahead of schedule, Madrid 2012 has prepared its response to the IOC questionnaire required of applicant cities. Proving its commitment, the document will be presented in September to the Spanish Olympic Committee. The bid emphasizes a very compact venue plan.
According to bid sources, the plan will involve three areas that will host the 25 sports. The maximum travel time within each area would be 10 to 15 minutes and would be no further than 20km from the city centre. The plan utilizes 90% existing venues that would only need to be upgraded in some cases. Adequate public transportation already exists between the venues so that private vehicles would not be required.
A recent public opinion Poll of Madrid citizens shows that 85% support the bid. Madrid 2012 will be competing against Moscow and one of four U.S. bids and five German bids, and potentially Paris, Rome and Toronto – to name a few.
