Ignacio del Rio, head of Madrid 2012, expressed his conviction that if Madrid wins the bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games it would become “Olympic City”. He said he was convinced that if Madrid makes the cut it will become the 2012 host city.
During the year he said the bid committee will begin planning its sports venues.
He said the future of Madrid’s candidacy depends on 50 per cent bid, 25 per cent international politics and another 25 per cent sports politics.
One of the Olympic venues, the Palacio de los Deportes de Felipe II, will be inaugurated in January 2004 with an international sports tournament.
The future Olympic Village will be 850,000 square meters and will house 18,000 athletes. After the 2012 Games it will be converted into a university.
