Madrid 2012 Can Compete With New York, Paris And London

The El Pais newspaper reports that Madrid officials believe their bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games has what it takes to compete with New York, Paris and London.

Feliciano Mayoral, chairman of the Madrid bid committee, said he didn’t see any weak points in the (Madrid) Olympic project.

He said Madrid’s compact site ought to play in its favour, with all sports except for rowing and canoeing within a 20-kilometre radius.

The rowing and canoeing would take place about 40 kilometres south of Madrid at Aranjuez.

“What the IOC wants is guarantees that the projected infrastructures would be ready in time and Madrid can do this”, said Mayoral.

Madrid is presenting its bid to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday.
