Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson highlighted the potential benefits of a successful Scottish Commonwealth Games Bid at the Scottish Affairs Select Committee, and urged everyone in the UK to get behind Scotland’s bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The Sports Minister said, “Scotland’s Commonwealth Games bid presents us with a great opportunity – not just for Glasgow and Scotland, but for the whole of the UK. The chance to host the two largest sporting events in the world in the UK in the space of two years is too good an opportunity to miss. Scotland is delighted to support London in the run up to and during the 2012 Olympic Games and we look forward to UK-wide support as we strive to bring the Commonwealth Games to Scotland”.
London’s Mayor Ken Livingstone also supported Glasgow’s bid. He said, “the entire UK’s passion for sport was demonstrated in Scotland’s backing for London’s 2012 bid and I have no doubt this support helped in our success. For Scotland to win the right to host the Commonwealth Games would be great for the whole country, and the ideal way to keep up the sporting momentum following the Olympics.
“I am sure a Games in Glasgow would be excellent. I wish the bid every success and give it my full backing”, he said.
