London’s Mayor Has 2012 Olympic Concerns

Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, has reportedly admitted for the first time he is unhappy about the environmental policies proposed by London 2012 Summer Games organizers.

During questioning by Jenny Jones, a Green Party member of the London Assembly, the Mayor also admitted that decisions on the sustainability of the Games depend upon the budget negotiations with the Government.

He said, “as things stand at the moment there are areas where the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) approach falls short of where I wish to be, particularly on waste, water and timber procurement issues.

“You won’t get a final decision out of the ODA until we have a final budget or somebody has come with the price. That’s why it’s important that we actually see the Government pick up the gap. If we fail to do that we might very well fall short of where we want to be in sustainability”.

Livingstone added that he is pushing the government to come with the funding for that gap while following the issue through as far as it will go.
