London 2012’s Bid Could Be Affected By Transportation Budget Shortfall

A London transport watchdog issued its annual report Tuesday in which it warned that the city is facing a budget shortfall of up to 1.1 billion pounds over the next three years which could ruin attempts to upgrade transport networks in time for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, an event London hopes to host.

The London Transport Users Committee (LTUC) urged the government to recognize the city’s importance to the U.K. and offer a grant reflecting its size and standing in the world.

Without a substantial cash injection from the government to give London a fair deal, the LTUC says “we can forget running an effective public transport system for the population we have now, let alone for the next decade, and certainly not for a successful Olympic bid”.
