London 2012 – Transport On Track, Green Games

Transport construction for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games are “on track” said the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). According to the ODA construction is 75 per cent complete.

ODA chairman James Armitt said, “moving hundreds of thousands of spectators and tens of thousands of athletes, media, officials and Games workers in the summer of 2012 is a huge logistical challenge. We are on track for completing the transport improvements needed for Games and legacy. We are not complacent and are working hard with our transport delivery partners to ensure that we maintain this good progress as we move into detailed operational planning”.

Meanwhile London 2012 organizers have said that carbon emissions of venues being built at various sites are expected to be 40 per cent less than those without a sustainability plan.

Organizers say they have already delivered a 15 per cent reduction of emissions across the site – 50 per cent on the Olympic Stadium – in line with the sustainability goals of the green build program. They are working towards a target of zero landfill waste.

The venues reportedly will produce 1.9 million tons of greenhouse gases instead of an estimated 3.4 million tons of CO 2.

Other sustainable achievements include diversion of 90 per cent of construction waste from landfill and delivering 60 per cent of materials using rail or water transport.

Changes to the main stadium amount to 15 per cent reduction, while installation of an onsite wind turbine and a low-carbon Olympic flame are being developed with EDF are the other green measures.
