Ticket applications for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games should reach their target by Tuesday’s deadline, according to the Organizing Committee.
Ticketing director Paul Williamson said, “we are confident that we’re on target. We’ve had hundreds of thousands of orders come in. We’ve seen a real lift in applications in the last 48 hours and we expect that to follow through to Tuesday.
But Williamson said he won’t be able to say for certain that the goal of 80 per cent sales has been met because all the applications will be processed before the actual sales are rung up. He said, “we’ve always said that people who apply on day one should have the same chance as the people who apply on the last day, so we want to make sure it’s a level playing field for everyone”.
Meanwhile London 2012 has published its first environment report which says they can deliver the world’s first “truly sustainable” Olympic Games.
According to the report, London 2012 wants to cut the carbon footprint by 100,000 tons of carbon emissions in the procurement of materials and venue construction.
Organizing committee chairman Lord Coe outlined in the report what he felt were among the innovative highlights of the London Games. The BBC quotes Coe saying, “no one had tried to calculate the complete carbon footprint of a Summer Games, and no one had built an 80,000-seat stadium as light in structure and environmental impact as ours”.
David Stubbs, the committee’s head of sustainability, said the concept of sustainability played a defining role in the project. The main stadium was constructed using a range of techniques, including recycled material, said Stubbs.
The report focused on the five main themes of the 2012 Games – environmental strategy, climate change, biodiversity, waste, inclusion and health living.
The organizing committee plans to publish two more reports over the next two years.
