Ticket prices for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games were revealed Friday and will go on sale in March 2011. According to a press release there will be a range of prices and initiatives to make tickets as accessible as possible.
There will be 8.8 million tickets available for the Olympic Games and 75 per cent will be on sale to the public starting March 2011. Ninety per cent of those tickets will be priced at 100 pounds or less, while two thirds will be priced at 50 pounds or less and 2.5 million tickets will be priced at 20 pounds or under.
Ticket prices will be per session and will vary from sport to sport. There will be 649 separate ticketed sessions across the 26 sports during the Games. All tickets for events in and around London will include a travel card.
Also, 100,000 tickets will be donated to schools in London and around the UK via the London 2012 “Get Set” education network and the Olympic and Paralympic style schools sports competition.
According to LOCOG, more than 200 Olympic Games sessions, a “pay your age” scheme will operate. Those 16 and under at the start of the Games will pay their age, and anyone 60 years and over will pay 16 pounds, to be spread across all sports and venues.
London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe said, “we have three clear principles for our ticketing strategy – tickets need to be affordable and accessible to as many people as possible, tickets are an important revenue stream for us to fund the Games, and our ticketing plans have the clear aim of filling our venues to the rafters”.
He added, “we have one very clear message to the public. ‘Sign Up’ to our ticketing website to get all the information you will need over the next five months as we build up to the start of ticket sales in March next year”.
London 2012 say it will have more tickets on sale for disabled people than any previous Olympic Games in history. Using the “highly accessible” ticketing website, there will be seating option available for the visually impaired and hearing impaired, as well as those who can’t manage steps and those using wheelchairs. The cost of a ticket for a wheelchair space will also include the cost for one companion seat adjacent to it.
