The schedule of events for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games was released Tuesday and shows that ticket sales begin March 15, 500 days ahead of the Opening Ceremony. The Games take place between July 27 and August 12, 2012.
There will be a six-week window for applications which ends April 26. Tickets for the Paralympic Games go on sale September 9.
A total of 8.8 million tickets are available for the 26 sports. Each ticket includes free travel on public transport in London for the day of the event to encourage spectators to use the transport system and take in the festivities throughout the city.
There will also be free events including road cycling, triathlon and the marathon, which take place on the streets of London. Large screens at “live sites across the UK” will also screen the event.
The lowest ticket prices are $32, mostly for preliminary round action, while the best seats for the 100-metre final will cost $1,160.
More than 2.2 million people have registered their interest in purchasing tickets.
The final weekend of the Games will feature gold medals in volleyball, basketball, water polo, modern pentathlon, field hockey, handball, sailing, gymnastics, football, diving, mountain biking, canoe spirit, boxing, archery, track and field and the men’s marathon.
Applications for tickets will be open March 15 on the official 2012 website for those over 16 years of age and are residents of the U.K., or designed European countries. Overseas fans must apply through their national Olympic committees.
Meanwhile the Metropolitan Police has launched Operation Podium to close down bogus sites before the tickets are available.
