London 2012 Promotes Fitness Week With “Celebrate Sport”

From June 1 to 8 Londoners will be treated to free sports facilities to promote London’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Local authority, commercial and voluntary run sports clubs in more than 26 boroughs will open their doors for a week of free fitness opportunities in exchange for a simple voucher which can be found on the London 2012 Web site.

London 2012 head Sebastian Coe said, “the Celebrate Sport scheme is a fantastic opportunity for people all over the capital to get active – it’s just one of the many benefits for Londoners that has been developed as a direct result of the London 2012 bidding process. I think it highlights what our bid is all about – encouraging more people to take part in sport. I’m grateful to all those organizations in the public, private and voluntary sectors of sport that are opening their doors for Londoners and supporting our bid”.

A recent poll indicates that 79 per cent of Londoners support London’s bid.

Meanwhile, contrary to media reports, owners of the London Eye site said there is no likelihood of the Eye facing eviction on July 1.

Last week the operators of the giant wheel, one of the attractions should London host the 2012 Games, were said to be in talks with the owners amid fears they were planning to raise the rent for the site from 65,000 pounds a year to 2.5 million pounds.

The owners now say, “we have not issued a notice to quit and no legal proceedings have commenced”. They add they have never claimed rent of 2.5 million pounds at any point in the negotiations.
