London 2012 May Relocate Venues

According to the British media, London 2012 plans to relocate as many as three proposed sports venues because their original plans would require too much travel for athletes.

Bid officials are considering switching shooting, mountain-biking and fencing to venues in or near the site earmarked for the main Olympic Park near Stratford, East London, the proposed venue for 17 sports.

There has been criticism from the International Olympic Committee in a report last May that travel distances were “among the longest” of the cities competing for the 2012 Games. The report also said that while transport serving the main park was adequate, connections to other venues would be “challenging” for athletes and spectators.

Originally, there was a proposas to stage the shooting 45 miles outside London, mountain biking the same distance away, and the fencing to a venue closer to the planned Olympic Village in Stratford at Alexandra Palace.

There are no plans to relocate sailing or rowing froorm their proposed sites of Weymouth and Eaton respectively.
