A feasibility study has found that London hosting the 2012 Summer Olympic Games won’t affect Scotland’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
A formal bid by Scotland could be made as soon as September, reports The Herald.
David MacKay, former chairman of the Scottish Rugby Union which headed a panel that conducted the study said “the people choosing the host city for the Commonwealth Games will be entirely different from those within the International Olympic Committee (IOC) who cast their votes for London”. He added that it would be “superb for Scotland” and “the legacy to Glasgow should be enormous”.
Backers of a Commonwealth Games bid point out that Montreal hosted the Olympics in 1976 and Edmonton was later awarded the 1978 Commonwealth Games.
Glasgow is likely to be Britain’s only bid, while cities from Canada, South Africa and Nigeria are also thought to be considering entering the race.
The deadline for applications to the CGF is March 2007 and the selection of the 2014 Commonwealth Games host city will take place in the fall of 2007 in Sri Lanka.
