London 2012’s aquatics centre may be delayed by two years since the government last month sent plans for the centre back to the drawing board after the projected cost spiralled to almost double the allocated 75 million pound budget.
A spokeswoman for the interim Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the body overseeing the construction of facilities for the Games, said Wednesday that she did not believe it would be ready in 2008, but “it will be ready in time for the Games. It will be finished by 2010. No new design has yet been approved. The architects are continuing to work on the plans to cut the costs and to refine the detailed design”.
Organizers of the Games insist that award-winning architect Zaha Hadid will deliver the project within budget, allowing for inflation, and that there are no competitions planned that would be affected by moving the completion date back two years.
