Newsday reports that a state panel whose unanimous support is needed to build the West Side stadium, which is also the proposed stadium should New York win the bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, might be prohibited from voting before litigation is settled.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said waiting past the July 6 date when the 2012 host city is selected, would doom the city’s chances of winning the Games.
State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said Tuesday, “it’s presently being litigated, and I’m not sure the Public Authorities Control Board (PACB) can meet while there’s litigation. They may be enjoined from whatever action that might be contemplated”.
He added that should New York win the 2012 Games state officials “will make sure that we have any facility that is necessary”.
But earlier this month New York Governor George Pataki, who backs the stadium, said that the state panel could vote even with outstanding lawsuits.
The PACB is to meet May 18 and officials say the arena will be on the agenda, but they remained unclear whether there will be any vote.
