Leipzig Wins Germany’s 2012 Nomination

At the Hilton Park Hotel in Munich, Germany’s National Olympic Committee voted from among five candidates and nominated Leipzig to be its representative for the 2012 Olympic Games bid.

Leipzig was decidedly ahead of Hamburg on the fourth and final ballot – Stuttgart was eliminated on the first ballot, Frankfurt fell on the second ballot and Dusseldorf missed on the third ballot. Sixty-nine of the possible 137 votes were required to win the majority and become nominated. Hamburg had received the best score in an evaluation report and Leipzig was second.

Rostock was nominated as the sailing venue in a separate vote defeating Kiel, Lübeck, Stralsund and Cuxhaven.

Leipzig will now compete against international candidates including New York and Madrid and possibly London, Paris, Toronto and others.
