The 14-member supervisory board of Leipzig 2012 voted unanimously Saturday to hold 97 per cent of the sports competitions for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games within a 10 kilometre radius of Leipzig with the concentration on Leipzig, in hopes of improving its chances of winning the 2012 bid.
The sports venues will be in four clusters around the city.
The sailing events will be held in Rostock, the preliminary soccer games will be in Riesa, Chemnitz and Dresden and the equestrian events will take place in Moritzburg and Dresden.
Leipzig’s Mayor Wolfgang Tiefensee said that the change was necessary because they wanted to improve their chances of winning the 2012 bid.
A majority of the 2012 sports facilities will be temporary.
Meanwhile the Saxony government has renewed its financial obligations to Leipzig’s bid. It will be responsible for 30 per cent of the construction of the sports facilities and provide 20 million euro should the city win the 2012 bid.
